Family & school

School and IEP support in BC.

To get school support for a child with a disability in BC, register in your local district, ask the learning-support team for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and request assessments if they haven’t been done. Here is how it works, and how Steady Path helps you prepare.

The steps, in order

You can advocate with confidence

School meetings can feel overwhelming in a new country. We help you prepare: what to ask, what your rights are, and what the words mean, so so you walk in ready. The decisions stay with you and the school; we walk beside you.

Questions

School support, answered plainly.

What is an IEP in a BC school? An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is the school's written plan for how it will support a student with additional needs: the goals, the adaptations, and the services. As a parent you can request an IEP meeting and take part in shaping it.

How do I ask a BC school for support for my child with a disability?Register your child in your local school district, then ask the school for a meeting with the counsellor or learning-support team. You can request an IEP and ask for assessments — psychoeducational, speech-language, or occupational therapy — if they haven't been done.

Do I need a diagnosis before the school will help? You can start the conversation without one. Ask the school about assessments, and connect with Child & Youth Mental Health (CYMH) for behavioural or emotional support. Steady Path can help you prepare for these meetings.

Can Steady Path Society come to school meetings with me?We help you prepare: what to ask, what your rights are, and what the words mean, so you can advocate with confidence. Decisions about your child's education are made by you and the school.
